Abstract:

Background: Leptin and its receptors have been found in the human gastric mucosa.  Its secretion by gastric mucosa has generated interest in its probable role in the gastrointestinal tract and pathophysiology of diseases. Objective: To determine any possible correlation between serum leptin level and pathological findings in patients with duodenal ulcer (DU). Methods: In a cross-sectional study, 22 patients diagnosed as DU were randomly selected and compared with 22 healthy controls.  From each participant a fasting blood sample for measurement of serum leptin level and anti-H pylori antibody IgG was taken.  Two antral biopsies for evaluating the intensity of gastritis and H. pylori infection were also taken from patients with DU. Results: Compared to the control group, serum leptin level was significantly (p<0.05) higher in patients with DU.  Leptin level also significantly (p<0.05) correlated with the presence of gastritis and H. pylori infection. Conclusion: An increase in serum leptin in patients with DU may be a defense mechanism. There is a possibility that leptin accelerates ulcer healing.

Serum carbenoxolone in patients with gastric and duodenal ulcer

The absorption of carbenoxolone sodium has been studied in 15 patients with gastric ulcer and eight patients with duodenal ulcer treated for four weeks. Blood levels of carbenoxolone showed a log distribution, varied markedly between patients, and were significantly higher after Biogastrone tablets (300 mg/day) than after Duogastrone capsules (200 mg/day). Serum carbenoxolone levels were simila...

Serum gastrin in duodenal ulcer

Following truncal vagotomy and anterior pylorectomy for duodenal ulcer, fasting serum gastrin levels were higher at 84 ± 7.9 pg per ml than in unoperated patients with duodenal ulcer (16 ± 1.5 pg per ml). In response to a standard protein meal, the peak serum gastrin achieved in the vagotomized group was 259 ± 37.8 pg per ml at 75 minutes after ingestion, a much higher response than that obtain...

Chinese patients with duodenal ulcer

In groups of Chinese patients with duodenal ulcer and controls, increasing the dose of pentagastrin from the standard dose of 6 ug/kg to either 9 ug/kg or 12 ug/kg did not result in any change in the maximum acid output (MAO). Comparison of the MAO thus obtained with that reported in series of Occidental subjects suggested that the Chinese subjects had smaller MAO. Using the method of Card and ...
